The Veteran's Corner

What does it take to make a hospitalized Veteran smile?  A whole lot of people who care!  Does our Elks Lodge 948 care?  You bet we do!
A prime example of caring is the boxes of books deposited into our lobby each month.  These books are sorted and delivered to our Veterans and enjoyed by many.
What we nood also are two or three volunteers willing to devote three to four hours a week to assist in this endeavor.  Please call me and you are rewarded by that deep-down feeling that Elks Care and Elks Share.

Soccer Shoot 2002

On a hot and humid Saturday, September 7th, our Lodge hosted a very successful Soccer Shoot.  There were 74 kickers, plus parents, grandparents and over 30 Elks and Elkettes.  There was popcorn, lots of drinks and 160 hot dogs served to our guests.  All the participants received certificates and the top three in each age group received trophies and tee shirts.  The 6 winners according to age group will advance to compete on the District level.
Miami Lodge 948 also hosted the South District Shoot on September 14th.  All of our winners won and will take part in the South Region Shoot on November 2, 2002 in Lehigh Acres.
My thanks to all of the Elks and Elkettes who put up the goals, registered the kickers, wrote the certificates, served the refreshments, were judges and ball chasers.  I will not list all of the above, for we know who was there and you did the Lodge proud.  I have been fortunate for the past three years in having mostly the same group working with me and making our Shoots the successes that they are.

Activities Committee Report

We had over 200 people attend our Labor Day BBQ!  I think that breaks all records for Labor Day.  Thanks for Chef David and the Yard Crew who pitched in to help.  Sorry our CD player decided not to cooperate as planned.
On the Saturday evening of September 14th, the Rhodes Brothers did it again!  It was a terrific musical show to a wall-to-wall group of people - about 280!  We are especially proud of Ed Rhodes, since he's one of our very own.  If you did not enjoy their show, it's because you were not there.  In addition, our Dining Room served more than 120 dinners that otherwise would not have been served on Saturday night.

Do we have a full schedule of events for October???  Just keep reading!
Saturday, October 5th we will have Rick Aikens and his crew for Karaoke from 7:30 to 11:30 pm.  This is a fun night, so come out and join us.
Saturday, October 12th, Frank and Mickey Panebianco will present Broadway Showtime.  This will be another fantastic show and a sell out, so get your tickets now!  Remember the Variety Show last year under their direction?  The Swingables will provide music for the show, and dancing from 8 pm until Midnight.  Show time will be 9 pm.   You don't want to miss this one!  Tickets are $10 per person, not including dinner, and are available from Ella Mae Shroyer or Helen Everett.
Another Kiddies Poopl Party is planned for Sunday, October 13th from 1 to 5 pm.  Also, November 3rd we will have a Costume Party by the pool, so wear your Halloween Costume and win a prize!
Ben Jackson and his committee will have their Charity Golf Tournament at Miami Springs Golf Course on Saturday, October 19th.  If you don't play golf, you can still go and give your moral support.  See the Golf Tournament page for more information.
On Sunday, October 20th, a New Members Party will be held poolside for all new Elk & Elkette Members initiated after April 1, 2002.  Felix Sensale and his crew will do his famous Fish Fry, with Chef David doing all the fixins.  Tickets are $8.00 in advance or $10.00 at the door.  Tickets are available from Bartenders, Ella Mae Shroyer or Mickey Rauch.
The Karaoke King of the Keys, Bill and Mar Roberts will be with us on Saturday, October 26th from 8 pm until Midnight.  Bill is the Exalted Ruler of the Marathon Elks Lodge, so come out and give him a big welcome.
We will have our traditional Hobo/Halloween Costume Party in the Lounge on Wednesday, October 30th from 6 pm until ???  There will be costume prizes and, of course, our famous Hobo Stew for $5.00.  Come out and enjoy the fun!
The Miami Elks Mighty Players Group has been discontinued due to lack of participation.  I want to thank the few that did show up.  I thought you were very good and I am disappointed that it has been dropped.
In addition to the above events, the Dining Room is having St. Patricks Day in October on Thursday, October 17th, and Oktoberfest on Thursday, October 24th.
